Many of the women leading our water efforts as part of local CAPS committees are also mothers – strong, resilient, and deeply committed to the well-being of their communities. They give endlessly of themselves, often carrying both the physical and emotional weight of their families and neighborhoods.
But behind that strength is a story. Many of these women had to grow up quickly. The carefree days of childhood were cut short by responsibility, and moments of rest have been rare ever since.
So last month, in honor of Mother’s Day, we gave them something different: a weekend to breathe.
We took the CAPS moms on a special retreat to northern Nicaragua, where they spent the day canoeing, picking strawberries, chatting, and simply enjoying the beauty of creation. It was a chance to step out of the daily grind, to laugh, to relax, and to be cared for rather than care for others.
And the result? Joy. Deep, contagious, healing joy.
It was a sweet and much-needed weekend of rest, one that matters not just for the moment, but for the long-term sustainability of their work. Because this work is hard, and without space to pause and be renewed, even the strongest can burn out.
We’re so grateful for these women. Their contributions to our water projects are crucial, but even more so, their lives are worthy of celebration.
