Sanitation is the next critical step in building healthier communities. And it’s not just a practical need; it’s an act of mercy. Because one of the most impactful ways we can care for people’s health is by helping provide safe, dignified solutions for something we all need and understand: going to the bathroom.

WHAT’S AT STAKE

Here are four of the biggest challenges families face without proper sanitation:

DISEASE EXPOSURE

Open latrines let pests spread illness, especially in open-air kitchens.

HYGIENE BARRIERS

No nearby sinks means handwashing and bathing become a challenge.

LACK OF PRIVACY

Girls often bathe outside or hold it in due to fear, shame, or no access.

UNSAFE CONDITIONS

Flooded latrines in rainy seasons are a drowning hazard, especially for small children.

WE’RE TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS THROUGH

Build-a-Baño

Each bathroom includes a flush toilet, sink, shower, and a septic system and is a major step toward health, safety, and dignity. This year, our goal is to raise $165,000 to build 55 sanitary bathrooms in the community of San Carlos.

Here’s how it works:

Families in the community pitch in, contributing labor by digging their own septic tanks and helping construct the bathroom structure.

SuNica provides all the materials and brings in a trained construction professional to guide and oversee the work.

Each family contributes a small portion of the cost (roughly 5%), ensuring shared investment and long-term ownership.

Doña Julia, president of the San Carlos Water Committee, has been dreaming of modern bathrooms for years. Because latrines aren’t just outdated—they’re unsafe.

“Mothers live with constant worry every night when their children have to walk through the dark—flashlight in hand—just to use the bathroom. They walk through the brush with the danger of snakes or strangers around.

Plus, the latrines aren’t always properly sealed, and that affects hygiene. That’s why we believe modern bathrooms aren’t a luxury—they’re a necessity.”

Doña Julia’s testimony represents the voice of a community dreaming of transforming its reality. With the support of SuNica and the donors who believe in change, modern bathrooms will become a source of health, hope, and dignity for the families of San Carlos.
